Learning a foreign language has already become an irresistible trend in today’s tight-knit global village. While some people advocate that schools should set special courses to teach all the students foreign languages, dissenters believe that for those who aren’t born with the natural talent, language study should not be made compulsory. As far as I am concerned, I strongly agree with the idea proposed by dissenters out of consideration for necessity and doubtful actual effect.
Many people claim that the increasing connection between countries requires students to master another language which gives them an edge in communication and global business. Yet, with the constant development of modern technology including intelligent translator, the torture of learning a brand-new language doesn’t seem to be that necessary, especially for people who lack aptitude. Nowadays, having a palm-size translator or app downloaded on cellphones enables everyone to conduct a conversation, read the sign or meet basic daily needs just by touching a simple button when going abroad. Even in certain situations where high-quality translations are needed, professional interpreters with expertise can definitely meet the requirements of any picky client. Neither the smart technology nor special-trained professionals you choose, forcing a student without the natural ability to learn a language for the sake of benefiting communication never come as a necessity.
Besides, compelling students to learn an obscure language regardless of their will and individuality could by no means perpetuate growth. Getting to know the whole architecture of a language and using it skillfully is quite demanding as users would encounter difficulties in all aspects: flexible phrases, intricate sentences and strenuous practices and so on. The tortuous process could last more than a decade even for a general student, let alone students with less talent. Under the same teaching level, they have to double the efforts in a bid to catch up with peers, which may lead to even more terrible learning experience. Such being the case, allowing them to concentrate on subjects that they are deft at or really arouse their interest is much more conducive to their future orientation rather than forcing students to study a language unwillingly without achieving the expected effect.
All in all, learning could only yield fruitful harvest when contents are useful and students’ wishes are respected and followed, and I hope curriculum could be more reasonable to cater for students’ talents.
